Shoulda been on Corner Gas
There's this cashier in the little market near my house that is just...odd.
The first time I encountered her, I noticed she was a little different but maybe she was just having a bad day. The customer in front of me asked her how her day was. She replied "Bad! My bike was stolen!". She then proceeded to describe the details surrounding the event in excessive detail. I heard the whole story, and not wishing to hear it twice, didn't ask her how her day was when it was my turn.
Not so weird, right?
The next time I went through her till, Garrett was with me. Let's call cashier girl "Sandra".
Sandra: Hello there. How are you NOT doing today?
Kim: silent, weird expression on face.
Garrett: Oh, good.
Sandra: OOoohhh?! You're NOT good then, are you?
Garrett: What? Oh no, I mean bad...um...I'm not bad today.
Kim: silent, weird expression on face.
Sandra scans all of our items except a candy bar at the end.
Sandra: Is that everything for you?
Garrett: Yes, thank you (not noticing there was still something on the conveyor belt).
Kim: No, we want the candy bar too.
Sandra: Hahahahahaha. SHE noticed there was something left. Guess you do want the candy bar.
Kim: Yes.
Sandra tells us the total. Garrett gives her his debit card to swipe. Pin pad has a sign on it that reads: "Cashier must swipe."
Sandra: At least I know you're not stupid.
Garrett: What?
Sandra: Because you can read that the "Cashier must swipe".
Garrett: Oh, yea.
Since we were nearly done by that point, we managed to avoid having any more awkward conversations with the girl. She probably thinks she's being so funny and witty, however she makes people uncomfortable. Yes, actually, I DO want mundane and repetitive conversations with cashiers - is that so much to ask for? I do not wish to be confused and insulted when I buy groceries!
And the last thing about her that I noticed yesterday, which isn't really that bad, but emphasizes her weirdness, is that she was wearing capri pants with white socks pulled high up her calf while at work. Capri's and tall white socks should never go together.
