Weekend hiking trip - Fay Glacier and back again
On Saturday, Garrett, Ian, Joelle and I started out on a 4-day hike starting at Marble Canyon in Kootenay National Park. This part of the park suffered from a huge wildfire 12 years ago in 1996. Even now there remains large swathes of burnt trees, with new growth slowly reappearing. It's a little creepy to look at, and gives the horizon an unfocussed look to it. The first part of the hike is 10km's along the valley beside the river.Unfortunately, we started our hike around noon and had to walk through the worst of the day's heat. It was really warm out with no wind, and since the trees have no foliage, no shade. We took a break for lunch near the river's side.We continued on, taking pictures of a few of the sights, like this slide region looking up the mountain:As we followed the river, we had to cross a number of small streams using logs as makeshift bridges or hopping along the rocks. After reaching the fork in the trail, we turned to start climbing up the side of the mountain. Our destination hut is way at the top of the ridge in the below picture:We started our hike around 1475m and had to attain 2145m where Fay Hut lay. It was a long hot climb up the hill.We saw lots of nice waterfalls on our hike up.We took a break on the slope before we got to the really steep part of the hill. Ian and Joelle:Here we are!The last bit of the trail before the hut is a little bit steep and has a fair bit of loose rock, so there is a handy rope there to help you climb up. It was actually quite fun. There's Garrett:That's Ian ahead of me:Garrett and I:Garrett and I down below:Once past that part, we were basically at the hut. There was a nice waterfall nearby:This was looking back down towards the valley:Once at the hut, we made some dinner and relaxed in the evening light. It was a nice night out.I don't have all of the pictures that Garrett took, so I'll probably post extra photos later on, separate from this entry. Stay tuned for more details about our trip! The next few days were move exciting!
