Maui Day 2 - Part 1

On Sunday morning, both Bindi and I woke up quite early due to the time change, but we were happy enough to get a jump on the day. It was sunny and warm outside, so we got up and got organized.

Here's our hotel room:The kitchenette where we made toast for breakfast, as well as stored some snacks:The jacuzzi tub, conveniently located next to shutters that open into the main room. Perhaps nice if you are on a romantic getaway, but a bit too personal for Bindi and I. The shower and toilet had separate doors off the bathroom. Quite nice:After grabbing a bite to eat, we went for a walk around our resort and took some pictures, since we had arrived in the dark last night. Here is the courtyard and main pool:Pond with koi:The koi liked people (maybe because they feed them?), so they came near when we stood on the bridge:Pool chairs in the courtyard. That's me on the right:Cute little bird that lived on top of the poolside umbrellas:Here's me in front of our resort entrance:We walked around to the beach and went for a stroll along the shore for awhile. Here are some nice shots of the pristine beaches and ocean:After our walk and some mishaps with some mud, we returned to the hotel and swam in the pool before getting ready for the day. We showered and dressed, and then drove our car 10 minutes south to the town of Lahaina, a cute little oceanside town with the highest concentration of tourist shops on the island. Here's the boardwalk in Lahaina:Just off shore in Lahaina was a sunken sailboat, stuck on the reef:In the middle of Lahaina is a large square filled with a huge banyan tree. The branches spread a good 40 meters in diameter, with numerous root systems coming down from the branches. Some of the branches grew so far away from the trunk in a horizontal manner that they were propped up by supports put in place by the town.Example of roots coming down:After doing a bunch of souvenir shopping in Lahaina, we had lunch in a Chicago deep dish pizza place. It was a nice little restaurant with a patio overlooking the water. On the patio, we met little Stumpy, the bird shown below. I think this kind of bird is basically a Hawaiian verison of a pigeon, but this little guy was missing all the toes on one foot, so he had a peg-leg. We named him Stumpy and tried very hard to take a good picture of him, but he wouldn't stay still.
