Hockey day in Kim-ada

On Saturday afternoon, Joelle, Ian and I were invited out to a hockey/potluck party at Bonnie's house (not my friend Bonnie - this is a different Bonnie). My friend Erik was back visiting from Sweden, so his former labmate Bonnie threw him a party while he is here. We drove out to her acreage outside the city and headed out back to the pond in behind her house. There, once the snow as cleared, we skated and played hockey for three hours! It was really fun and I wasn't nearly as terrible at it as the last time I was there for hockey.

Lacing up!There's the rink:You can see the two doggies on the ice - they were really funny because they went crazy after the puck for the first hour we played. We warmed up by playing "keep-away" from the dogs, and they would just run all over the ice barking their heads off. Eventually one of them would get the puck and carry it off into the snow, but they were usually pretty good at dropping it right away. Then the game would start again! It only got annoying when we were actually trying to play hockey.
Joelle and Erik, getting ready to go:Getting ready to play hockey:Joelle and Megan (not, it's not me although it sure looks like me. I thought it was me at first too! But I was wearing jeans and a pink hat) on the ice:Later on, once we'd been playing for several hours and just before we had to stop because it got too dark:You can see me in the middle of this picture - pink hat!
After the game, we carried all the gear back up to Bonnie's and settled in for the potluck dinner and visiting. It was a really good meal, complete with a large ham and pineapples (yum!). With the food and all the activity earlier, I was sure tuckered out by the time I made it to bed!

Silver Skate Festival

On Saturday afternoon, Bonnie, Sean, Garrett and I met up in Hawrelak Park to enjoy the Silver Skate Festival. This is a Dutch inspired event, and included Dutch snacks at the concession, free skate rentals, sleigh rides and the opportunity to try sledge skating and speed skates. As well, there was a speed skating marathon earlier in the day w(hich we didn't attend). The weather on Saturday was fantastic and sunny - a perfect day for skating! Here's the pond in Hawrelak Park:Both Bonnie and I were pretty unsteady on our skates but soon enough gained some balance. Both Garrett and Sean have grown up on skates, so they had no problem getting around.
Garrett took some pictures of me later in our skating adventures, when I was more steady on my feet. He made it look like I was going super fast!I took some pictures of Garrett skating, when I made him skate as fast as he could so I could see how awesome he was (he was very awesome):Here are some more pictures of us skating:After skating, we checked out the snow sculptures. There weren't that many, but they were pretty impressive nonetheless. This next sculpture is a dome with an angel carved out of the inside:Lastly, we went on a sleigh ride! It was my first sleigh ride ever, and was very exciting, although Bonnie kept threatening to push me off the sleigh and into the snow (she didn't because I claimed I would take her down with me).It was a really nice afternoon and I'm glad we were able to see the festival. Hopefully we can go every year and experience as great of weather as today!

Cat skills

Pumpkin has learned a new game recently, and Garrett took some pictures of her playing it the other day. Basically, she sits on top of the couch, and when I toss one of her balls at her, she swats it back to me. It's like mini-kitty baseball. Obviously, the motion is difficult to catch in stills, but you get the idea:Look above for the green/gold crinkle ball, and below for the blue poofy ball. Here is Pumpkin and I!

Beauty and the Beast

On Tuesday night, Bonnie, Sean and I went to see the musical production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. It was held at the Citadel downtown, to which I'd never been before - I was pleasantly surprised with the Citadel complex, which holds a number of different theatres and reminds me of an indoor shopping centre. It was also pleasantly humid, as the Citadel boasted lots of tropical plants.

My main impression of the show was that it had a big budget for costumes and set design - it was so elaborate and fun! The costumes were spectacular, especially Lumiere (the candle guy) - his candle hands could actually create real flames! I thought it must have been heavy for that actor, though, to hold up those candle hands for nearly the entire production!

Overall, though, I really enjoyed the show - it was fun and colorful! Plus, the love story is such a feel-good one that you can't help but feel warm and fuzzy inside. I knew lots of the words to the songs, since I watched the Disney cartoon many times as a child, and some of the conversations were verbatim out of the movie too. It made me want to see more musicals, since we had such a great time at this one!

Baby shower

On Saturday, Darci, Suellen and I threw Lindsay a post-birth baby shower. Lindsay was a tech in our lab for a year before she went on maternity leave, and both Darci and Suellen also work in my lab with me. We had the shower at Lindsay's house, and brought all the food/plates/games etc in with us so she wouldn't have to do any work for the shower. We had all the guests bring a little something to eat, so there was lots of food for the lunchtime party.
Plus, one of Lindsay's friends is amazing at making cakes, and she made this beautiful baby bear cake:It's edible! We all had a piece near the end of the party.

The shower was fairly low key, as in most of the time we just chatted and snacked. We played just a few simple games with some little prizes. The craziest part of the shower was actually all the three-year olds that came with their mom's and were running around playing. Since I'm not used to being around that many kids, it was a little overwhelming, but they were surprisingly well-behaved, aside from being incredible dirty little creatures (meaning, they got food everywhere in the house and on themselves).
Here's Suellen (left) and Darci (right).Bonnie (left - also in my lab) and Lindsay (right):Since it was a post-birth baby shower, we were able to meet Tyler and pass him around, although he slept through almost the entire party thrown in his honor:

Foot tracking

My plan was to keep track of the number of footsteps I took all week and average the numbers out to get a true estimate of how much I walk each day. However, I forgot to bring the step counter to school the first few days and I got bored of wearing it after two days. Plus, on Thursday, it reset on its own at some point, so I'm not even sure how accurate the count was in the end. In any case, here is my meager data:

Wednesday Feb 6th
7997 steps, 3.67 km, 263.27 Kcal

Thursday Feb 7th
8576 steps, 3.85 km, 282.33 Kcal

The step counter reset on Thursday sometime around lunch. The last time I glanced at the step count, it was at 3251, and then after lunch it was at 721. So, I'm not sure how many it actually got up to between 3251 steps and reseting, so this is just an estimate.

A Golden weekend

This weekend, some friends and I went down to Golden, BC for a ski weekend getaway. I rented us a cabin through the internet which was a really good price - 300$/night, sleeps 9. This amounts to just over 30$/night/person, which is a great deal for a cabin that has a hot tub and full amenities. I was a little concerned that it might end up being crappy, but it was really amazing and cute.
I drove down on Friday afternoon with Bonnie, Sean and Catherine. It took us about 6.5 - 7 hours to get to Golden, including bathroom stops and dinner in Lake Louise. We had to drive the pass between Lake Louise and Golden in the dark, which was in fairly good condition but a little slippery compared to the rest of the highways. We made it to the cabin around 8pm and everyone else trickled in right after that. We sat around visiting that evening before we hit the hay.We rose bright and early to head to Kicking Horse ski resort around 8:30am. Most of us went skiing, but a few people went snowshoeing during the day instead. In any case, I snowboarded most of the day with Catherine and Bindi, both of whom were skiing and at a very similar skill level to me. We started the day off on some green runs, but since we felt really good on those runs, we promptly took the gondola up to the top of the hill to take a green/blue run all the way down. Kicking Horse is a very TALL hill, so riding from the top all the way to the bottom is a serious trek. It's also a very steep mountain, which really helped me to improve my skills on steep slopes.

We all met for lunch in the Day Lodge and then hit the slopes for the afternoon. This time, we did two runs with the whole gang. The first run we did with the better skiers (Garrett, Ian and Joelle) was supposedly a blue run, but right at the top, it was super steep and probably actually a black. Bindi, Catherine and I were a little freaked out that we had to get down this slope. I basically slid down on my butt, partly because it was so steep that if I stood up, my butt was basically still touching the slope! I made it past the steep part and the rest was breezy, except for some moguls that popped up part way down. After that, us girls stuck to the other runs that we felt more comfortable with.

On Saturday night, we all made dinner in the cabin. We spent some time in the hot tub and some time watching movies. We also played some board and card games. Here are the few pictures we took:

Ian hopping out of the hot tub to roll in the snow:Ian dashing back into the hot tub with a frozen back side!Me, sitting in the living room, watching the end of the movie with the gang.I'm hoping to get some more pictures of the ski hill from Garrett, so I'll post those once I get them.

A day at the beach

I recently got the rest of Garrett's pictures from our Christmas trip to Gibsons. It was really pleasant one afternoon, so we walked to the beach and Garrett took some neat pictures. I've posted my favorite ones here.

1. Sun setting over Gospel Rock.2. Wave rolling back over the rocks.3. Pebbles, up close.4. Mom and Kim at the beach.5. More sunset, a little earlier in time than the previous picture.6. Wave crashing onto the beach.
